The word anthropology originates from the ancient Greek word ἄνθρωπος (Cycladic Civilization, B.C 3300 - B.C 2000) meaning mankind is a species looking upwards and studying what they see. (Plato's Cratylus. Section 399c.) The experience of looking upwards and contemplating the universe is not confined to any one generation. It has been shared by humans throughout the ages and has almost become a human instinct.

But in the current increasingly mediated data age (Couldry, Nick, and Andreas Hepp. , 2016), people are always looking down at their phones and electronic devices, convincing themselves that ‘the new looking up is looking down’. Information technology is so thoroughly used in everyday life that people have become accustomed to it and take it for granted. (Tom Gunning, 2013) People are immersed in a spiral of "curiosity"-"habit"-"neglect" brought about by new technologies and devices. “Datafication has evolved into a recognized new paradigm for understanding sociality and social behavior. ” (José van Dijck, 2014)
